AI SDR vs AI sales agent: two different jobs

One goes after people who have never heard of you. The other takes the conversation your customer already started and runs it the way your best closer would.

One generates pipeline. The other runs the sale.

An AI SDR and an AI sales agent do different jobs. An AI SDR works the top of the funnel outbound: it picks accounts from signals, runs email and LinkedIn sequences, and books a meeting for a person to take. An AI sales agent works the demand you already have: it picks up the conversation the customer started, reads intent, handles objections, books the next step, and follows up for as many days as your playbook says. TOPPP builds the second kind, around the playbook you have proven.

  • Who speaks first

Outbound, you speak first, into a list. Inbound, the customer does, and the clock is already running.

  • Where the job ends

An AI SDR is done when the meeting is booked. A sales agent is done when the deal moves.

  • Whose method runs

One writes from its own copy model. The other runs the playbook that already works in your business.

Five questions no category name answers

Job titles blur. Mechanisms don’t, and these five decide what you actually get.

Who starts

AI SDR
You do. Accounts picked from signals, then sequenced
Generic AI sales agent
The customer does, on a chat widget you installed
TOPPP · built to your playbook
The customer does, on whichever channel they already use

How far it goes

AI SDR
To a booked meeting. A rep carries it from there
Generic AI sales agent
To the end of the answer. The next step is nobody’s job
TOPPP · built to your playbook
Through qualifying, objections, booking and follow-up across days

Whose method

AI SDR
Sequence templates and its own copy model
Generic AI sales agent
One messaging logic for everyone, so you get the industry average
TOPPP · built to your playbook
Your SOP, your roles, your review criteria, your takeover line

Who takes over

AI SDR
A rep, on a calendar invite the prospect can see
Generic AI sales agent
Fixed rules, or no takeover at all
TOPPP · built to your playbook
One contact at a time, backstage; to the customer it is the same advisor

When it gets it wrong

AI SDR
Edit the sequence, watch reply rates next week
Generic AI sales agent
Adjust the prompt and watch what happens
TOPPP · built to your playbook
Checked before launch, replayed turn by turn after, and versioned to roll back

The right two columns are one category. What separates them is whose playbook runs.

Three choices, and two are not us

Start by ruling us out when the fit is wrong.

  • Pick an AI SDR

Your problem is an empty pipeline. You have a list nobody has spoken to and reps whose calendars need filling. We do not build lists or run cold sequences.

  • Pick something simpler

What you need is answers, and the conversation ends once the question is answered. Cheaper products do that well.

  • Pick a team built to your playbook

Inbound volume is high, follow-up runs for days, sales headcount is your biggest cost line, and one person already closes better than the rest.

A quiet sales desk before the day starts, phone in its cradle and notebook closed — the point where a team decides between an AI SDR, a simpler answering product, and a sales agent built to its own playbook.

Four questions that settle it

Answer them about your own business. The answer comes fast.

  • Where does your next customer come from?

If they raise a hand before you speak, outbound solves a problem you do not have.

  • When a meeting is booked, is the work done?

If the sale happens inside the conversation, booking is not the finish line.

  • Ask three of your people the same objection — same answer?

Three answers means the playbook is not fixed yet, and that is exactly the raw material.

  • Before the first message, who owns consent?

Cold outbound puts TCPA and GDPR questions on your desk. A conversation the customer opened starts somewhere else.

Bring your playbook — watch it become a team

A demo runs about 30 minutes: we map your current playbook, show how it becomes an AI closing team, then run both ledgers on your own numbers.
